What a roofing square actually is
A square is 100 square feet of finished roof surface. It is not a square 100 feet on a side, and it is not a measure of the building footprint. The unit survives because it makes bundle counts, labour rates and material pricing all land on convenient round numbers: shingles are packed three bundles to the square, underlayment rolls are sold in 4 and 10 square rolls, and labour is quoted in dollars per square.
The conversion chain is always the same: footprint area → multiply by pitch multiplier → true roof area → divide by 100 → squares → add waste → multiply by three → bundles. Skipping the pitch multiplier is the single most common estimating error and understates the order by 5 percent on a 4:12 roof and 41 percent on a 12:12.

Bundles, and where three per square breaks down
Three-tab and most architectural shingles run three bundles per square, but heavier products do not. Designer and luxury laminates — thick, multi-layer shingles imitating slate or shake — commonly run four or even five bundles per square because a single bundle would be too heavy to carry. Always read the coverage printed on the wrapper rather than assuming.

Choosing a waste factor honestly
Waste is not padding — it is the material that physically cannot be installed. Every valley cut, every rake trim, every course start that does not land on a full shingle produces offcut. The more planes and intersections a roof has, the higher the unavoidable loss.

Round up to whole bundles at the end, never down, and buy one extra bundle beyond the rounded figure for future repairs from the same colour lot. Shingle colours drift between production runs, and a patch made from a different lot is visible from the street for years.
A complete worked take-off
House: 44 × 30 feet with 16-inch overhangs, simple gable at 6:12, one ridge, no valleys.
- Roof footprint including overhang: 46.67 × 32.67 = 1,525 sq ft.
- Pitch multiplier at 6:12 = 1.118. True roof area = 1,525 × 1.118 = 1,705 sq ft.
- Squares = 1,705 ÷ 100 = 17.05. With 10 percent waste = 18.8, round to 19 squares.

Notice that the rake length of 18.3 feet is itself a pitch calculation: half-span 16.33 feet × 1.118 = 18.26 feet of rafter line. Every linear accessory on a sloped roof — rake starter, drip edge on the rake, gable trim — has to be measured along the slope, not on the plan.
The accessories that blow budgets
- Ice and water membrane. Required at eaves in cold climates, typically two courses (6 feet) up from the eave in severe zones, plus all valleys and penetrations.
- Valley material. Open valleys need metal; closed-cut valleys consume extra shingle. Budget 1.5 shingles per linear foot of valley.
- Ventilation. Ridge vent is sold in 4-foot sections and replaces plain ridge cap along the vented run; you still cap over it.
- Pipe boots, one per plumbing vent, plus step flashing at every wall intersection at roughly one piece per shingle course.
- Drip edge on eaves and rakes, in 10-foot lengths with 2-inch laps.
On a typical 20-square residential re-roof, accessories and underlayment run 15 to 25 percent of the material cost. A quote that lists only shingle bundles and a labour rate is incomplete, and the gap usually reappears as a change order.
Reading a roofing quote against your own take-off
Once you can produce a square count yourself, a quote stops being a single number and becomes a set of claims you can test. Three figures matter: the square count, the waste percentage and the accessory list. If a contractor quotes 24 squares on a house whose footprint and pitch give you 19, ask where the extra five come from — a second storey, a detached garage, a double-layer tear-off charged by area, or waste already folded into the headline number.
Tear-off is billed separately and by layer. A single layer of asphalt shingle produces roughly 250 pounds of debris per square, so a 20-square roof yields about two and a half tons and needs a 20-yard dumpster. A second layer roughly doubles both. Quotes that omit disposal or that assume one layer on a house with two are the most common source of change orders.
- Check the square count against footprint × pitch multiplier ÷ 100 before anything else.
- Ask whether the stated squares include waste or whether waste is added on top.
- Confirm the underlayment type and whether ice and water membrane is included at eaves and valleys.
- Confirm the number of layers being removed and the disposal allowance.
- Confirm deck repair rate per sheet — a fixed per-sheet price avoids an open-ended charge.
- Confirm the ventilation plan: ridge vent length, intake at the soffit, and whether old box vents are removed.
- Confirm the nail count per shingle, which is four normally and six in high-wind zones.
A worked comparison makes the difference concrete. Two quotes on the same 19-square roof: quote A at 380 dollars per square with synthetic underlayment, four nails and one layer of tear-off comes to 7,220 dollars. Quote B at 455 dollars per square with full ice-and-water membrane, six nails, ridge vent and two layers of tear-off comes to 8,645. Quote B is not more expensive for the same work — it is a different scope, and the 1,425 dollar gap is almost exactly the membrane and second tear-off layer priced separately.
