What this calculator does
Gutter sizing is the matching of gutter profile, trough size and downspout count to the volume of water the roof will shed during a design storm. The peak flow rate depends on the roof area, the local rainfall intensity and the roof pitch — steeper roofs deliver water faster. K-style gutters carry more water than half-round gutters of the same nominal width because they have a larger cross-section. Downspout capacity, not trough size, usually governs the design: a 2×3 inch downspout can drain roughly 600 square feet of roof in a 4-inch-per-hour storm, while a 3×4 inch downspout roughly doubles that.

A 2×3 in spout serves about 600 sq ft; a 3×4 in spout serves about 1,200 sq ft.
Worked example
A 2,400 sq ft roof at 8:12 in a 5 in/hr rainfall zone, K-style gutters with 2×3 in downspouts.
- Pitch factor: 1 + 8 ÷ 72 = 1.111
- Peak flow: 2,400 × 5 × 0.623 ÷ 60 × 1.111 = 138.5 gal/min
- Downspouts: ceil(2,400 × 1.111 ÷ 600) = 5
- Recommended gutter: 6-inch K-style
Use 6-inch K-style gutters with five 2×3-inch downspouts, or switch to 3×4-inch downspouts and reduce the count.

Can I use one downspout for a large roof?
Only if the roof area and rainfall intensity are within the downspout capacity. Most roofs need multiple downspouts to prevent overflow during heavy rain.
