What this calculator does

Sloped roof area is the true surface area of the roof planes, not the horizontal footprint underneath. Because roof planes are tilted, the same footprint produces more surface area as the pitch gets steeper. Roofers express that surface in roofing squares — one square is 100 square feet — because shingles, underlayment and labour are all priced that way. This calculator starts from the footprint area and applies the pitch multiplier, but it also lets you derive the pitch from a known slope length and run, which is useful when you have measured the roof directly rather than the building below.

How to use it

  1. Measure the building footprint area at ground level, including any bump-outs.
  2. Enter the roof pitch, or enter a measured slope length and its matching run to let the tool derive the pitch.
  3. Multiply the footprint area by the pitch multiplier to get the true sloped area.
  4. Divide by 100 to convert to roofing squares.
  5. Add a waste allowance — 10% for a simple gable, 15% or more for hips and valleys.
  6. Round every material order up to whole bundles or panels.

Worked example

A 2,000 sq ft footprint with a measured slope length of 18.5 ft over a 16 ft run, and 12% waste.

  1. Derived rise: √(18.5² − 16²) = 9.30 ft
  2. Derived pitch: (9.30 ÷ 16) × 12 = 6.98:12
  3. Multiplier: √(6.98² + 144) ÷ 12 = 1.1568
  4. Sloped area: 2,000 × 1.1568 = 2,313.6 sq ft
  5. Squares: 23.14; with 12% waste: 25.91 squares

Order roughly 26 squares of roofing material for a 2,000 sq ft footprint when the slope length indicates a 7:12 pitch.

Common mistakes

  • Ordering material against the footprint instead of the sloped area.
  • Forgetting that the pitch multiplier grows quickly above 8:12.
  • Using slope length without the matching run, which makes the derived pitch meaningless.
  • Applying one pitch to a roof with multiple pitches, such as a gambrel or cross-gable.
  • Rounding squares down instead of up to whole bundles.

What is the pitch multiplier?

The pitch multiplier is the ratio of the rafter length to the horizontal run. It converts a flat footprint area into the true sloped surface area. For a 6:12 roof it is 1.1180.

Can I calculate sloped area if I only know the slope length?

How many squares is a 2,000 square foot footprint?

At 6:12 the sloped area is 2,236 sq ft, which is 22.36 squares. Add 10% waste and you need about 24.6 squares, so order 25 squares.

Does sloped area include overhangs?

Only if your footprint area includes them. The multiplier applies to whatever footprint number you enter, so include eave and gable overhangs in the footprint first.

Why is sloped area larger than footprint area?

Because the roof surface is tilted. A steeper roof has a longer rafter line for the same horizontal span, so it needs more material to cover the same footprint.
